You definitely shouldn’t feel bad about contacting them for an update.

Even if life has gotten in the way as far as working on the commission itself, it’s incredibly important to keep your client informed so they aren’t worried you’ve forgotten about them.

At the same time though, it gets really old for a client to hear “oh just one more week” over and over, so if the artist feels they’ll need more time time than just that, they really need to not feel awful about saying so.  (As in…. actually saying so and not … contacting the client months later with “whoops, sorry this has taken so long”.)

Communication when money is changing hands for a product where instant gratification is not a factor is hugely important, and keeps both parties happy.
